When was the society founded?

The CBSS was founded over 30 years ago.

What are the aims and objectives of the society?

The broad aims of the society are to:

  • Enable property to support the delivery of front-line public services.
  • Seek more efficient ways of procuring, managing and maintaining the property required to deliver those services.
  • To promote the use of property that is appropriate for its intended use in terms of suitability, sufficiency, condition, cost, and environmental impact.
  • To improve the stewardship of the environment by reducing energy and water consumption and CO2 emissions.

Is membership restricted to Councils?

No - Although historically membership was restricted to Council managers and in more recent years membership has expanded to Fire & Rescue, Police and Passenger Transport Authorities.

Does the Society promote membership and activity from private companies?

Yes - Much of the work previously undertaken by Councils now falls upon private companies to manage; many of these are through formal partnerships. Proof of this is in the Society disestablishing the Associate Membership and offering members from these organisations full rights and privileges.

What are the benefits of membership?

The society provides members with the opportunity to:

  • Share experiences and learning.
  • Learn from innovation in the public and private sectors.
  • Have a greater lobbying voice with central government.
  • Keep up to date with Statutory changes and developments in the use of materials, equipment and Health and Safety.

Does the Society encourage retired members to remain amongst its ranks?

Yes - The Society is rightly proud of its record of retaining members who have retired and welcomes their input that experience brings to discussion forum.

Do members need to travel great distances to attend meetings?

No - The Society is structured into Regional Chapters with these reporting to three National Meetings held centrally in the country.

Who decides on current topics of interest for discussion?

These normally follow national trends, however members are actively encouraged to suggest topics and to share good practice experienced in their respective organisations.

What is the purpose of this website?

The principal function of this website is to promote the work of the Society and also to assist in "Getting the message" across to all members and in turn their own organisations.
