The Equality Act 2010

October 2010 ? The Equality Act is now in force.

The vast majority of the Equality Act's provisions came into force on the 1st October 2010. This landmark legislation strengthens, harmonises and streamlines 40 years of equality legislation, providing protection from discrimination across all the ?protected characteristics?: age, disability, sex (including gender reassignment), race, religion and belief, and sexual orientation. The Equality Act affects you as an employer and service provider and applies whatever the size of your organisation or sector you work in.

The Act will see the existing detailed provisions of the outgoing Disability Discrimination Acts 1995 and 2005 relatively unchanged but the phraseology has been altered. Additionally, the legislative force in relation to disabled people has been strengthened ? despite relating to ?a range of protected characteristics? and not just disability.

The Act will effect on the built environment and the construction industry as a whole and this newsletter provides an introduction for property professionals.

Dear All,
To my knowledge this is the second assessment on the subject of Radon gas, which affects all of us, due to its known presence in basement rooms anywhere in the UK, since 2008! The previous action level was at 300 Bq / M3. How many of you have radon monitoring in place?
You may wish to consider inviting a speaker on this subject to our AGM in November or at Chapter meetings?
Hope you are enjoying your Summer.
Kind regards
Chris
